The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

The ancient mariner stops 3 wedding guests, asking them to hear his story. Only one, however, remains with him, despite mariner's strange appearance and his 'glittering' eye.
Thus, mariner's story begins. The ship, of which crew he was a part, is driven south

and it reaches Antartice, the land of ice. Suddenly, an albatross, a bird of good omen, appears and ...

leads the ship out of the Antartic.

The mariner, however, shoots the albatross without any reason. The other sailors are angry with him since they believe the bird brought the good weather. But when the wheater does not change, they forget their accusations.

The sailors change their minds and blame the mariner for their thirst. As a sign of his guilt, they hang the dead bird around his neck (metaphorically).

Suddenly, a ghostly vessel appears, approaching mysteriously - moving without any sails. On board are Death and Life-in-Death

who play dice for the lives of the sailors. Death wins the crew while Life-in-Death wins the mariner.

200 sailors drop down, one by one, looking directly into the mariner's eyes and leaving him for seven days and nights alone with his curse.

The curse falls off when the mariner spots watersnakes in the seas and blesses them. At that moment, the dead bird falls of his neck and he starts to pray.

Good spirits possess the corpses of the sailors and steer the ship home where it sinks. The Mariner is saved by the Hermit, pilot and a boy.

As a penance for his deeds, the mariner has to wander the earth and retell the story again and again so that his listeners learn something from it. The wedding guest, a sadder but a wiser man now, leaves the mariner (whose eye is bright) and decides not to attend the wedding.
